A Visit to Appleton-le-Moors

Appleton-le-Moors is a near-perfect example of a planned medieval Yorkshire village; and it is close to Rosedale Abbey making it ideal for any holiday maker wanting to visit the Moors Inn for lunch or dinner.

The Moors Inn at Appleton-le-Moors.

Appleton-le-Moors has a very wide main street which originally gave room for common grazing of animals all those years ago.

Each plot of land - or "toft in the local dialect - in the village runs to a back lane.

In the olden days, the tenant farmer living in each toft would have a farm house, animal houses and a barn.

Appleton-le-Moors also has some appealing local architecture; with the village school and church having a distinctive French Gothic style and the interesting little corrugated-iron reading room at one end of the village.

The school and church were built in the 1860s by the architect J.L. Pearson.

I reckon that a drive down to Appleton-le-Moors will reward any visitor.

And a visit to the Moors Inn in the centre of the village will sustain you for the trip back to Rosella Cottage!
