Whitby is an ancient town - at least 2,000 years old.
And like similar ancient urban settlements in England, the road network in Whitby was never designed for the volume; nor types of vehicles now common on British roads.
And as the lowest fording place on the River Esk, the narrow "swing bridge" is a natural bottleneck in the centre of town.
Whitby Streets - Not Designed for Modern Cars.
One of the commonest questions we are asked by guests, therefore, relates to car parking in Whitby.
The whole system changed in 2014 when a park-and-ride scheme was introduced.
The park-and-ride - with 450 free spaces - has encouraged day-trippers to leave their cars in the designated car park on the outskirts of town and to catch the shuttle into the town centre.
This new system has worked quite well in removing much day-tripper traffic from the down town area.
But the system is of no use to people who are visiting Whitby for short breaks; since the park-and-ride car park does not allow overnight parking!
But rest assured, we have a good solution!
As a Whitby business, we are able to issue all our guests with complimentary parking cards which give access to free on-street parking in designated zones in the West Cliff area.
There is also a short-stay pay-and-display car park within 150 yards of Spyglass 1708 which is ideal when first arriving/leaving for dropping off or picking up your luggage.
So parking isn't typically much of a problem for our guests - except at very busy times like Regatta week in high summer.
