1. For real relaxation with a scenic twist, visit a National Park or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
2. Look for a self-catering cottage in a village location that has at least two or three good pubs serving food.
5. Make sure the cottage you choose is in an area that is blessed with lots of sights, places to visit and things for you to do.
6. Go for a location that is central to the main attractions in the region you're visiting.
7. Use a trusted cottage letting agent or aim to book directly with the Owners.
8. When you arrive, make sure everything works, and communicate with the Agent, Owner or local key-holder to fix problems quickly.
9. Look for "insider information" from the Owners or local key-holder on the best places to visit, places to dine, and "off the beaten track" highlights that others might miss.
10. Don't book more guests that the cottages stated maximum occupancy.
