Plan a Day at the Yorkshire Seaside

With summer just around the corner, the prospect of a day trip to the seaside along the Northeastern boundary of the North York Moors is on the cards.

The North York Moors is blessed with a stunning and dramatic coastline; and it's all available just 30-minutes from the heart of the Moors here in Rosedale Abbey.

So it might be time to start making your summer holiday plans?

Here are my own thoughts on how best to enjoy a day out at the Coast if you're holidaying in Rosedale this summer.

Sandy Beaches

Having been born at Saltburn, I'm aways drawn to the long strand of flat sand at Saltburn; and with the dramatic Huntliffe rising up at the Southern end of the beach, there is rock-pooling on offer too.

There's an Edwardian-era pier and a magnificent water-powered Cliff Lift as well.

Other favourite sandy beaches include Sandsend, Whitby, and of course, Scarborough.

There’s plenty to do at all thes coastal favourites; and fish and chips and plenty of good pub-dining as well.

Coastal Walking

The North York Moors is blessed with numerous long-distance walking paths; all of which can be undertaken as sectional day-walks; or broken down further for just a pleasent stroll.

Like the North York Moors National Park, the Cleveland Way offers the best of both Worlds - taking in the high Moors as well as the Yorkshire Heritage Coast.

The Coastal section of the Cleveland way passes through Saltburn-by-the-Sea in the North and hugs the coast all the way South as far as Filey.

The Cleveland Way is Easily Accessible to Visitors to Rosedale Abbey.

The walk path takes in the tranquility and drama of the Coast.

You'll discover high cliffs, hidden bays, lovely beaches, marine wildlife and seabirds, sea caves, ancient castles and abbey's, and smashing fishing villages steeped in tradition.

My own favourites are Staithes, Runswick Bay, and Robin Hoods Bay.

Cycling the Coast

The Yorkshire Heritage Coast between Whitby and Scarborough offers two wheel fans the opportunity for a fab ride that delivers all that's great about our local Coastline.

Using the flat path offered by the abandoned Coastal railway line, the Whitby to Scarborough cycle route is an off-road cinder-track that takes in Robinhood's Bay, Ravenscar and Cloughton Wyke.

Cyclists are rewarded with amazing views of the many cliffs and bays; and the sounds of the sea as you cycle near the shoreline.

Rockpooling on the Yorkshire Heritage Coast is a Family Favourite.

Must See...Must Do...

Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood's Bay for historic villages, great views, and fantastic rock-pooling.

Whitby for fish and chips, a walk in the "old town" and up the 199 steps, the Captain Cook Museum on Grape Lane, and a visit to the World famous Whitby Abbey.

Scarborough for a traditional day at an English seaside resort - or a little more culture with a visit to the spectacular Castle over looking the town.

No Trip to the Yorkshire Seaside is Complete without a Fish 'n' Chip Dinner!
