Is a Caravan Holiday Good Value?

The Daily Telegraph reports today (15th August 2013) that a caravan holiday does not make for a cheap break.

Towing a large and brick-shaped caravan can see a vehicles fuel-consumption double.

In the report by the Telegraph, caravan towing tests were made using a Dacia Duster and Land Rover Discovery.

In financial terms the budget Dacia would cost the least in extra fuel towing a caravan over 500 miles at £115.94.

The Land Rover was the most expensive, costing £179.07 extra with a caravan over 500 miles.

To put this into context, a round trip from London to Rosedale Abbey and back to London is 498 miles.

Pulling a caravan to Rosedale with a Dacia will cost around £230; and with a Disco it will set you back about £320.

Those figures do not include the site rental costs for a week's holiday - just the fuel to get to Rosedale and back to London.

So compared to a week-long holiday in Rosella Cottage here in Rosedale Abbey, the costs of a caravan holiday may not stack up.
