Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal

For those visitors to Rosella Cottage in Rosedale who are staying for a week or a fortnight; we'd always recommend a visit to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal.

Fountains Abbey and the surrounding beautiful Georgian-era water gardens are just so lovely; and with a magical atmosphere!

Situated over near Ripon, it's a pleasent drive to get there; but not too far for a good day-out.

The Abbey was founded in 1132 AD by disgruntled Benedictine Monks from York who "switched sides" and joined the Cistercians.

And Fountains Abbey was only the second such Cisturcian Abbey to built following the construction of our very own Rievaulx Abbey close-by to Rosedale.  As an aside, we'd also strongly suggest a visit to Rievaulx from your holiday base in Rosedale!

Fountains Abbey grew to become the largest and richest of its type in Britain.  And this power and status is reflected in the enormous size of the remaining ruins.

The nave is 370' long; the abbey Cellarium is 300' long;  and the great tower is 170' high.  It really is magnificent.

Nowadays, the Abbey is enclosed within the grounds of Studley Royal and the whole estate is managed by the National Trust, with the Abbey ruins being maintained by English Heritage on behalf of the trust.

And its all been disignated as a World Heritage Site.

You'll love it!
