The Jet Miners Inn, Great Broughton

In a Country with more that its fair share of King's Heads, Royal Oaks, and White Harts; it's nice to come across a pub that reflects both the local distinctiveness of the North York Moors; and with a unique name.

Technically, the Jet Miner's Inn is not inside the North York Moors National Park; but if you go into the car park - you can spit that far!

The Jet Industry

Sitting in the centre of the village of Great Broughton; and below the hulking mass of Crinkle Moor - at nearly 1,500 feet elevation - the Jet Miner's hark's back to a time when the unique jet mining industry involved thousands of miners across the Moors and along the Yorkshire Heritage Coast.

Jet is the distinctive black semi-precious stone that became famous and fashionable when Queen Vistoria adopted Jet Jewelry following the death of the Prince Albert - the Prince Consort.

Jet was mined across the North York Moors and you can still see evidence of the old Victorian workings in Westerdale and Rosedale.

And for good measure, you can still purchase beautiful antique or modern-made "Whitby Jet" jewelry in Whitby and Helmsley.

The Jet Miner's Inn nowadays is a pub given over almost entirely to dining.

There are lots of tables for diners!

So in that sense, it is really more of a restaurant than a pub these days.

The Jet Miners is a Traditional Yorkshire Pub With a Focus on Dining.

It also has a camping and caravaning site attached to the Inn at the back.

So it is popular with summer tourists, and locals from the affluent villages to the South of Middlesbrough who come out to eat.

But it still has a traditional public bar, however, with a small lounge; with pool table and darts board out the back for drinkers rather than diners.

The Public Bar at the Jet Miners is Nice and Traditional.

In fact, the entrance between the front bar and the lounge must be the smallest doorway in any pub in North Yorkshire.

It goes to show how small those jet miner's used to be!

At 6' 3", I certainly struggle to get my frame to fit through.

And above the door is the famous quote "Duck or Grouse".
