Walking with Children

Everytime we visit Rosedale Abbey, I'm shocked to the core when the kids choose to forego the pleasures of Facebook in favour of a ten-mile walk on the Rosedale Mineral Railway.

And walking on the North York Moors with our girls - Rosa (12) and Ella (10) - is always a hugely enjoyable family activity.

Sometime's we even manage to get Mum along too; and she's a runner who normally hates walking!

But I love my daily walk; and the idea of fostering a healthy habit with the kids is not to be missed.

I've found that our girls can easily manage a five-mile walk; they've been able to achive that kind of distance on the Moors for 4-5 years now.

Now that they're both over ten, the 9-10 mile circuit route from Rosedale Abbey, to Rosedale Head, the Lion Inn at Blakey for lunch, and the stroll back to the village is harder for them, but achievable.

And there is something momentous for the kids in walking 10-miles.

The 10-Mile Circuit Walk from Rosedale to the Lion Inn for Lunch is a Favourite.

I've heard them boast about doing it to friends during sleep-overs when we return home from the holiday cottage; and they seem to have a real sense of self-satisfaction at the achievement.

A really good thing about walking with the kids around Rosedale Abbey, is that it's possible to pick any number of routes that reach notable landmarks.

Reaching a landmark seem to give walks a purpose!

And walking on the Moors provides us with the time to really converse - about the things that matter - and about the silly-stuff that kids come up with.

I really can't recommend it highly-enough!  So get out and about on the North York Moors with your own children.
