The Esk Valley Walk from Castleton to Whitby is a 20-mile long waymarked route which takes you from the source of the River Esk and brings you to the mouth of the Esk where it joins the sea at Whitby pier-ends.
Beggars' Bridge Over the River Esk is Just One of the Highlights of this Lovely Walk on the North York Moors.
As a moorland-to-coast walk, it leads you from the high moorland around Castleton and through beautiful and verdant riverside country in Eskdale.
The walk begins at Castleton Moor railway station which is only a short drive from Rosella Cottage in Rosedale Abbey.
The walk can also be undertaken in the opposit direction to end-up in Castleton if walking from Whitby.
From Castleton, the walk passes through or near seven of the villages along the Esk Valley: Danby; Lealholm; Glaisdale; Egton Bridge; Grosmont; Sleights and Ruswarp. So there are plenty of opportunities to take on board refreshments in village cafes or pubs.
The walk can be undertaken in one go (for the very fit) or else it can be broken down into shorter sections for those walkers who wish to take a less strenuous stroll down the Esk valley.
At Rosella Cottage, we suggest that stage 1 from Castleton to Danby, Lealholm, and onwards to Glaisdale (about 10 miles) be undertaken in one day and stage 2 from Glaisdale to Sleights, Ruswarp and finishing in Whitby (10 miles) be undertaken on a second day.
There is an excellent accompanying booklet for the walk- "The Esk Valley Walk, A Regional Route", which includes Ordnance Survey mapping. You'll find a copy in Rosella Cottage or else it can be purchased at tourist information centres or online from the North York Moors National Park Authority.
Rosella Cottage is a luxurious self-catering, get-away-from-it-all holiday home in Rosedale Abbey; focussed on the holiday needs of active couples wanting a break from routine. We have a cosy lounge, small kitchen, a king-size bed in a spacious bedroom with vaulted-ceiling, and a lovely en-suite.
With a village-centre location it's easy to walk to the local shop, cafes, gallery & village pubs with great restaurants. Built in 1850 but now completely refurbished, Rosella Cottage offers a luxury bolt-hole in the heart of the North York Moors. To view availability and for bookings enquiries, just click here.
