Being England, you can't always be guaranteed of fine settled weather when you take a weekend break or longer holiday.

So it is important to have a "Plan B" for inclement days which are too wet or cold to get out-doors and visit the sites.

Luckily, for our visitors to Rosedale Abbey in the North York Moors, there are plenty of places to visit locally that offer the chance to take in history, culture, or good food; and stay out of the weather at the same time.

Listed below are a few places and activities which allow holidaymakers to easily pass a nice day inside when the weather is not so great.

Castle Howard

One of the largest stately homes in the Country.

It is easy to spend a good 3-4 hours walking through the rooms; and even more time in the shop, lakehouse cafe or tearooms.

And if the weather improves, there are also the magnificent gounds to wander through; which can add several more lovely hours to your visit.

Castle Howard is just 30-minutes drive from Rosedale Abbey.

North York Moors Railway

Buy a return ticket on this famous Yorkshire steamtrain line from Pickering to Grosmont or on to Whitby in summertime.

You'll have several hours of classic North York Moors scenary to take in as the train trundles through the heart of the National Park.

And you'll stay warm and dry at the same time!

And if the weather improves when you arrive, a walk through Whitby or Pickering is always a nice day out.

The station at Pickering is just 10-miles from Rosedale Abbey.
